Especially when you consider this fact from the link above: "The so-called "underemployment" rate--which includes everyone in the official rate plus those who are neither working nor looking for work, but say they want a job and have looked for work recently--fell to 16.5% in January from 17.3%" So the Underemployed rate also dropped, yet net jobs are down 20,000. I can understand how the "Unemployment Rate" could go up even as more net jobs are lose because lets say 100,000 people dropped into the Underemployment Rate but how do you lose net jobs and both rates improve. Does anyone have a link to information explaining this better than my link?

Thanks to all you financial experts who have posted helpful answers about the stock market in my recent questions. But actually, I was asking about NEWS COVERAGE of the stock market, not the market itself. Sorry that I didn't make myself clear on that. As I write this on Friday, the Dow is around 9750. That is down 300 from the Monday morning high around 10,050. But the market went up 200 on Thursday. So in the other four days, the market dropped 500 overall. So, in a week when the market rose 200 one day in 500 in all the other days, why does the one day 200 point advance get the headline news, while the news headlines totally ignore the fact that THE STOCK MARKET DROPPED 500 in the rest of the week. If you were on an airplane that dropped 5,000 feet, but at one point it zoomed up 2,000 feet before resuming its 5,000 foot plunge, would you find it comforting if the pilot came on the intercom and said "Folks! I'm pleased to inform you that we just gained two thousand feet!" but the rest of the time he pilot was silent while you could feel the plane dropping like a rock? Would you feel like you were being kept fully informed, or would you say somebody is being highly selective in what they choose to report?

How great is this idea for both Kmart and Sears Holdings Kmart announced plans to begin offering online layaway starting Friday, building on its successful in-store effort during the holidays last year as consumers looked to spread out payments on gifts. The chain, owned by Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD), saw double-digit increases in layaways last year and Kmart said Tuesday that online searches for the word " layaway" more than doubled in August from a year earlier. Most of my life has been pretty good. I had a better life than most of my classmates could ever dream of. Recently, I think I've been suffering a mild depression. In the next paragraph I will explain to you how I feel. Ever since I was a young child, I'm 16 now, I feel as though I've been making wrong decisions when I think back to my youth. The possibilities of what I could have done are endless! My deepest regret is not doing them. When I was very young, I used to swim, play Basketball, and T-Ball. Now I don't do any of that. Just recently, I went to a Baseball meeting for the first time in years and I turned it down because it included fund raising and I didn't feel very comfortable with the nationality of the people that were there. They were also very scummy and I didn't feel like spending my entire summer with them. But, once again, I'm beginning to regret the decision. Just like I regret the choice that I made to stop playing when I was young. Another thing is, I could have learned how to play Guitar, Piano, and learned to sing by now. I could have been excellent because my parents know how to play them and my mom could sing exceptionally well. Another wasted oppurtunity for me! My grades were never straight A's in school. They're better, but they aren't. I feel like I just suck at it because people really try to bring me down. They call me names because I care about my education and I care about more mature things. Such as the Stock Market, News, and what's going on in our Country. I feel that they are trying to take me down and get me not to care. So far, they're doing a good job. All this year I had A's and B's. Now, C's-F's. I still try, but I feel what's the use? School almost over and I just want to get it done and over with. Another problem is that people also take advantage of me because I could never think of a comeback or defend myself in anyway. Ever since I was young, I always had a difficult time fitting in with people. Now I feel like an outsider even though I do have a few close friends. Well, what I'm basically saying here is, is that I feel like I wasted most of my life. I want to change, but I feel as though something is preventing me. Part of it is those scumbags that I go to school with. My true dream is to become a billionaire, run my own LCC or something, and afford things such as Buggatti's or Aston Martin's. Cars like that. And all the other important things as well. But, I feel that these scumbags are preventing me from doing what I really want to do. How can I get them to stop and get my life back on track? Please, I really need help with several things. Most of the things that I need help with are above. Please help me change! I can't stand myself anymore!!!!!!

Here in the Carolinas we have had record turnouts for all of our Spring Festivals. And, retail and real estate is looking up. The latest stock market news have been better than we expected. And people are optimistic and will go back to big spending, once the job market goes back to normal. It looks bad now, but give it about 6 months. We have survived the shock of it all, now it is starting to set in. We are in a recession, but we will bounce back stronger than ever. Optimism is key. General Motors and Ford are feeling good about 2010. America is coming back folks, and The Tarheels will win tonight. Agree.

I need to keep track of market news stories. I'll be entering data daily- a list of stock symbols, the date, news source and headline summary. But I'm not sure whether this should be a spreadsheet or simple database. I want to be able to see all entries sorted alphabetically, chronologically, or by news source (with secondary sort being being chronological) The problem with doing this as a spreadsheet is the list will be constantly growing and I wish to avoid manually highlighting the entire range (which may be several pages) and specifying data/sort Can I make an excel spreadsheet that sorts automatically as new rows are added, or could peform the sort on all rows with one button? If I create an Access database instead, can I conveniently see all of the records sorted in the ways described above? And would entering the data be as easy as filling in an excel spreadsheet?

I am currently a sophomore attending The University of Texas at Austin, and am contemplating which degree would be best for me between economics and finance. My passion is finance, and I love keeping up with market news, trading, and investing. However, I love economics as well, even though I would say I have a bigger passion for finance. My ultimate goal though, is to earn an MBA in Finance, after working for a couple years after I get my undergrad. I do not know which degree would be best for me. The factors I am considering are: 1)Liberal Arts-Economics is more well rounded, and could help me more than finance to get into Business Grad School. 2)Finance will help me get a better job during normal economic conditions, which is more impressive than your degree when applying to grad school I assume. 3) With the way the markets are, if the economy is still unstable, maybe there wont be as many jobs for finance majors, as their might be a high demand for economics majors. 4)It seems redundant to get a business undergrad degree, and then attend business grad school, because I will be learning much of the same things, and I would rather be well rounded. 5) Economics is a harder major, and can take a hit on my GPA. Even if economics is a better degree, it is worthless if I can not keep a good GPA. Finance is not as hard, and I could keep my GPA up. 6) The Red McCombs School of Business at UT Austin is one of the top business schools in the country. If anyone could offer some advice, I wold greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I have an IRA, plus a 401(k) from a former employer and a 401(k) from my current employer. I'd originally decided to keep my previous employer's 401(k) just because I felt it would keep me even more diversified. I've lately heard that I *should* roll that 401(k) so I am not paying the fees on it. Do you agree? With the market news in the past couple of weeks, my 401(k) is surely down (I haven't looked). Is now a bad time to roll that money? Or should I roll it only after it has recovered a little?

So, I got a job for Guess, the clothing company, and I was supposed to start tonight for my orientation. I got a call last night from the manager saying my orientation needs to be rescheduled and they are thinking about changing it to the middle of October, but they are not exactly sure when. I have been waiting for this job for almost a month, and now I have to wait two more weeks or more? I asked for an explaination and she said business problems. So, since they cancelled on a short notice, after the stock market news, and they are not sure when I will be able to start, and it is cause from business problems, is all this happening because of the stock market? Is it legal for them to hire me and give me a day to start work, and then let me not show up? Is it possible that I may not even get to work there, even though I have willed out employment paperwork? Okay being in high school, (about 4 months till my liscense) I am, for one reason or another, worried as shit about the economy.
